Tips

  • Tell your manager in person or by phone first, then send the letter the same day so there is a written record.
  • Two weeks is a custom, not a law. An at-will employer can end your job sooner, so have your finances ready before you resign.
  • Ask when your final paycheck comes and whether unused vacation or PTO is paid out; both depend on your state and your employer's policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is two weeks' notice required by law?
No. In at-will employment either side can end the job at any time. Two weeks is the professional custom, and some contracts, union agreements or handbooks ask for more.
What if my employer tells me to leave the same day?
In most states an at-will employer can do that. Your final pay is still due under your state's rules, and some states require pay for the notice period in certain cases.
When will I get my final paycheck?
It depends on the state: some require it on your last day, others by the next regular payday. Ask HR, or check your state labor department's final pay rules.
Will my unused vacation be paid out?
Some states, such as California, require unused vacation to be paid when you leave; in many others it depends on your employer's written policy. Check your handbook.
How is this different from a resignation letter?
It is the short US form with the notice fixed at two weeks. For a different notice period or a longer letter, use the resignation letter generator.
